Introduction to Study:
Previous research in individuals having persistent auditory hallucinations has shown that two different neuromodulation techniques – namely – transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) as well as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) might be helpful in treating the hallucinations symptoms that have not adequately responded to treatment with medications.
However, patients respond differently (i.e., some individuals respond well to one of the treatments, and some do not respond to both the treatments) to these neuromodulation treatments. At present, we are unable to predict which patient will selectively respond to treatment with TMS or tDCS. The purpose of this research study is to identify predictors of response to these treatments using research techniques (details provided below) which in turn may potentially help us to offer better treatment in the future. In addition, this research might help us to understand the mechanism by which such improvement occurs (through techniques/tests as described below
